October 1956 : Takeover of the Singapore Trade Union Congress

The group met at James’ house in Serangoon Garden Estate. The plan was to take over the Singapore Trade Union Congress (“STUC”). The intention of taking over the STUC was to expand the power of the trade unions by “riding on the trust of the workers.” The takeover never took place.

The Special Branch report CO940/149 dated 8th November 1956, includes a typewritten copy of a handwritten document found at the Headquarters of the Singapore Factory and Shop Workers Union, 149 Middle Road on 27th October 1956. The original is in the hand writing of James Puthucheary.
