Dr. David Tan Chee Khoon, Mr. Aminuddin bin Baki and Mr James Puthucheary sponsored the establishment of “the Malayan Students Party within the University. Objects of the party will be to foster Malayan consciousness and civic responsibility among students, and to contribute to the development of the Malayan culture and nation.”
~ Straits Times
When the proposal of a Malayan Student Party in 1949 was presented, the University authorities were not in favour of it. James believed that the Malayan Student Party was still-born because David Tan Chee Khoon left the University and Aminuddin Baki decided to withdraw from it. Abdullah Majid took over from Baki. The proposal died a natural death while the university authorities were reviewing the proposal.
This organisation was mooted to contest in the elections of the student union. There was no intention to participate in national politics or municipal elections. There were a number of students who felt it was a good idea to bring Arts and Medical students together.
