The statement titled “The Ends and Means of Socialism” was released on the 4th June 1959 and signed by Lim Chin Siong, Fong Swee Suan, Sidney Woodhull, Devan Nair and Chan Chiaw Thor. James did not sign this statement. Devan Nair had drafted this statement as a show of support for the P.A.P.
James stated that his differences with the group during their detention led to a divergence in their views and camaraderie. A clear example of this is when the rest of the group were allowed to go to St. John’s island in 1958 and James opted to remain at the Changi Camp alone.
