21st January 1962 : Sustained Smear Campaign By Lee Kuan Yew

“Harry asked for my permission to publish my letter. He asked me to go and see him. I had a flu. He said, “No, no you must come. I will give you a pull-over. When I got there, there was a secretary waiting with a pull-over!”

“After a long chat, I was leaving, he said to me, ‘You know James, I have published your letter in a book. We are bringing it out, do you mind?’ As he opened the door, I saw all the foreign correspondents sitting in his lobby. I said, ‘ No of course not Harry. I really don’t mind if it is something I have said, I have to live by it. No problem, publish it!’ And I went home.”

Despite the seemingly close friendship James and Harry shared, James and Dominic were already being seen as people to be deported if they could be deprived of the Federal citizenship (ISC 23rd meeting 6 October 1961).
