Mavis graduated with honours in Economics in June 1955 and then left to study for Masters in Public Administration in Manila, returning to Singapore in July 1956. I worked under Lee Sheridan as Research Assistant in the University of Malaya Law Department for a few months. In December 1956 I joined the Singapore civil service.
