15th July 1961 : PAP Lost The Anson By-Election

James had gone to Bangkok when the Anson by-election was going on.

“When I came back, my brother Dominic, Ghaus, Chin Siong and Fong were waiting for me in my house. They said they have decided to support David Marshall. They were going to break with PAP and I advised them not to. However as I knew that Keng Swee, Harry and the others were going to purge the Party it was pointless to try to persuade these chaps to stay. I basically saw the party splitting into two.”
